Closet Efficiency at Home

March 13th, 2010

When it comes to having closets in a home, it is not necessarily the amount of closets you have but the amount of efficiency you get out of the closets you own. With a good storage strategy, whatever space you have is maximized and all your items are easily accessible. Closet organizers are the perfect accessories to have to turn any bland closet into an efficient storage space.

If you want your closet to be organized quickly, then purchasing an off the shelf closet organizing system is the way to go. There are many accessories available ranging from simple units such as wire baskets and plastic containers to some advanced designs such as a sliding shelf unit or a hideaway vanity. The simpler closet organizer units are easy to install because little or no DIY work is required. The more advanced units will require you to work a bit but these units have been designed with the users in mind so most of the work that needs to be done in installing them are not too difficult. If DIY is not up your alley, then most of the stores selling closet organizer systems do offer installation service.

Remember to consider just what it is that you want to store in a particular closet before running out to purchase closet organizer accessories. Take into account the hanging lengths of your clothes to see if you can implement a multi-level clothes hanger. If there are long clothes involved, maybe a shorter length lower hanger is needed to make room for the clothes hanging from the top. Calculate how many feet of hanging rods or shelving units you will need. Take note that drawers can be costly so you need to decide if an open shelf is acceptable or if a drawer is really needed.

Other than purchasing closet accessories that maximize storage space, you might also want to have a look at closet accessories that add functionality your closet. There are hideaway units such as mirrors which you can pull out of the side of the closet wall. You can install tiny little damper plugs that will avoid the closet doors from slamming when you swing them close. With the modern closet organizing systems available, upgrading your closet can truly be an interesting experience.

Topsoil Quality Can Affect Your Garden and Landscaping

January 19th, 2010

More and more homeowners across the country are starting to plant their own gardens, whether for flowers or vegetables. Many don’t realize that initial topsoil used in the creation of a garden is a vital ingredient that can make or break your landscaping project. Topsoil, even when bought at a landscaping supply business, can come in many different qualities.

The acidity of landscaping topsoil can vary widely from supplier to supplier, and material that has the wrong level can end up killing your plants or vegetables. While most topsoil that you buy from reputable suppliers will almost certainly be within the safe acidity level, it’s still important to ask questions about the quality of the product before purchasing a large amount.

Additionally, make sure that you visually check the topsoil before purchasing, especially if it’s scheduled for delivery. Far too many homeowners don’t physically look at the product before they purchase it, and after the topsoil has been dropped off at your property there will be little your can do to get your money back if it’s poor quality. Ensure that the topsoil you are inspecting is the same that will be delivered to your home, as well.

When the topsoil is delivered to your home, it’s best not to let it sit in a heap for long before mixing it into your garden. Most importantly, you must cover the material with a waterproof tarp if you expect rain anytime before it is to be moved. Topsoil can be rendered useless if it is rained upon before being placed in the garden, and you don’t want to have a muddy mess in your yard.

If you live in a moderately sized city, you should be able to find several local suppliers of topsoil in your city. Most landscaping material suppliers are honest and sell their products for fair prices, but make sure you ask questions to ensure that you are getting a good deal.

A Guide for Purchasing a Quality Vacuum Cleaner

January 3rd, 2010

There are thousands of types of vacuum cleaners and it can be confusing to know what type you should buy. Vacuums also vary greatly in price. Is it worth spending several hundred dollars on a vacuum or will a cheaper one suffice?

The first thing you must determine is what you are planning to do with your vacuum. Is it simply to vacuum the rugs in your apartment? Do you have a large home with a lot of carpeting? Do you want a vacuum that can operate on wood floors as well?

Vacuums can also be used in vehicles or in shops. It is important to determine what you want to do with your vacuum cleaner before you set out to purchase one.

Most vacuum cleaners are upright models now. However, there are still a few canister type models available. The better quality vacuums now come in the bagless variety. This means that all the dirt collected goes into a container which you simply remove from the vacuum and dump into the trash. Although vacuums with this feature typically cost more, you will save in the long run because you will not have to purchase vacuum bags. Also, it is a lot more convenient than realizing at the last minute that you are out of bags.

There are newer vacuum cleaners which don’t use suction at all. Many people believe they work better than the suction type vacuums because they can not become clogged.

Hate to vacuum? Perhaps you should consider one of the robotic vacuum cleaners. They vacuum the floor on their own. They usually are round and have a hard time getting into corners so you might have to follow up with some spot cleaning every now and then.

If you want to purchase a nice vacuum don’t forget about the extras. A quality vacuum will have an indicator that lets you know when the bag is full, if it is not bagless. A good vacuum should have headlights and be able to be adjusted depending on the height of your carpet or bare floor. The vacuum should also have accessories such as a curtain brush and a detachable crevice cleaner. It is even better if all these attach to the vacuum for easy storage.

Check to see what type of warranty the vacuum has. You will always need a vacuum cleaner and it is worth having one that is built to last and has a company who is willing to stand behind it.

Perhaps the most important factor in buying a quality vacuum cleaner is whether or not it is easy to find replacement vacuum cleaner parts and vacuum filters. It is easy to find Hoover parts for your vacuum but a lot more difficult to find store brand parts.

There are many vacuums to chose from. Vacuums even come in custom colors now! By taking into consideration these simple items, you are likely to find a vacuum that you are happy with for a long time.
